Why can't I sleep at darkness?

This has be going on for over 2 years. I tried going to sleep at 10PM, but I would always get up up two hours later and be wide-ranging awake for the rest of the night. What's unnatural is that once it hits 10-11 AM, I start to break down and I fall asleep until 6PM. I've tried shifting my habits, similar to not going on the computer at night, but I would other just wind up up rolling around in bed for hours. I tried reading my textbook and that didn't even work. Help? Why is this happening and how can I fix this? (please no medication suggestion as I don't use them unless I'm really sick)
