Should pts who have have numerous NG tubes put contained by them, who know how to do them, be allowed to put them within?
Upon the patients request, do you think a healthcare provider should allow a merciful who knows how to put an NG tube (and have several put in her already) be allows to do it on herself, if she desires one?
I've had to own one recently placed surrounded by me (not a new point for me, given my various GI problems) and I own been trained to do them (I be an LVN once). They had a student place it, but it took him several a bit painful tries. I could hold done it in one shot. If I have asked, would/should they have permit me place one in myself?
Answer: Sure; lots patients (or parents of pediatric patients) do this regularly. When our son was on an ng tube, we placed it at home. I would ask to do it yourself. The with the sole purpose thing we have to do was check next to a stethoscope for GI sounds to be sure we hadn't placed it in the lungs.
Our son have a permanent gtube immediately so we don't have to do it any more but we didn't entail more than a few minutes training, and if you're familiar beside the procedure yourself there's no medical reason why merely medically trained personnel can do it.
Well sure. In fact, you should insist that you be allowed to put your own down. Not seriously different than catherterizing yourself, and that is commonly done.
The problem we enjoy here is not whether a patient/client should be able to insert the tube if they are competent. The answer to that (in my opinion) is yes, providing they can demonstrate suitable experience.
The real problem is how the professional can cope beside a patient/client doing something that they can do. If, like various nurses and doctors, they think they are physical smarties being competent to put in a ngt, see how they would feel if it be done by an 'unqualified' patient/client. During my nursing career I own seen countless examples of patient/clients individual disempowered by the nurses' and doctors' arrogance. Many patients know what is best for them and they should be allowed the maximum autonomy to carry out minor procedure on themselves after acceptably demonstrating ability.
