(In addition to my other question) How hold you sprained your ankle?
The answer is simple.Normally, unless you are experiencing pain, you are not aware of (say) your skin hunch a particular mode. You know that you can feel it because you can touch it. When you touch (say) your knees, there is a sensation surrounded by your finger *and* your knee. If you be given a local anaesthetic in your knees, and you then touched it, you would perceive it through your finger but you would not feel the finger touching your knees. So, your knee is numb.
Likewise, when you obtain a local anaesthetic at the dentist, you can feel the side of your frontage with you appendage and you know that you're touching your face even though your frontage will not feel as if within is a hand touching.
