called a tracheotomy. a surgical procedure where on earth a small hole is cut directly into the trachea (windpipe) to relieve an obstructed airway. it's also used on patients who have be on a ventilator (had a breathing tube put into their throat through their mouth) for a while and are now equipped to slowly start breathing on their own.
a trach collar is a small plastic piece that is put over the hole within the trachea that is used to attach the vent to the merciful so they can breathe.
