Depending on what you did it could be very small micro-fractures that will alleviate in time but be sore until they do. You may also have bruised the bone and surrounding tissue which will exact pain also.

Probably though it's lately the muscles and ligaments that have be hurt so it's tough to breath because you rib cage expands when the lungs saturate with nouns (obviously).
