Well I guess it depends on the type of spider and the type of work you do. With someone with calloused hands, and a small spider (i.e. markedly short fangs) it may bite, but not be able to inject the toxins. Of course, with the bigger badder spiders this wouldn't be a problem and they'd bite you simply fine.
Its not a stupid question -- I can see how some "outdoorsy types" might tell you that you can't obtain bit on the palms. ;-)
