Does a thriving lifestyle one and only slow down the start of illnesses cause by ageing?

if a person exercises and eats drastically well, will they inevitably start having form problems and getting medical conditions as they age? (excluding the short period of time in which they are truly dying.)
ive come to think that as i get elder, im going to get more problems and become increasingly less competent, even though i eat and exercise well. am i one too cynical? does a healthy lifestyle only block the onset of illnesses? or if you live really healthily is it possible to be an old man who can still run, etc?
any medical evidence would be great.
thank you
