How to adjust to working hours of darkness shift?
I'm not a night person, my bedtime is 11:30 pm and I've kept it pretty consistent. However, I'm gonna start working from 7pm to 7am and 2morrow is my first night. How should I plan my hours of daylight for 2morrow? Thanks!
Answers:
Try to avoid working nights if you can. Night activities are not moral, for the most part.
When I first started working third shift I asked a woman who have been working that shift for several years "how long does it take to get used to this"? She answered me "you never win used to it"! She was right! I only lasted nearly 8 months and felt like I was losing my mind. So I transfered put money on to 1st shift and never looked back. Some people do it for years though, I dont know how. Put tin foil on all the window and take lots of sleeping meds like benadryl or generic sleep capsules. Go to bed around noontime at the latest. Good luck!
I worked 12 hour continental shift work for 4 months in order to get ample money to pay for my school (college). 2 weeks was spend on days (8a-8p) and 2 weeks be spent on nights (8p-8a). I am like you - usually asleep by 11:30pm but what I did, was the hours of darkness before I was to go onto hours of darkness shift, I would stay up all night. I would begin sipping on tea at just about 10:30pm/11pm as tea has much more caffiene than coffee and I'd just do random things - read a book, keep watch on tv, chat to some people on msn messenger, check facebook, watch youtube, etc. There were times where on earth I'd make it until 6:30am the next morning and there be other times where I'd only make it to 3:30am/4am.
Another method of doing it is to go to sleep at a normal time and wake up at a ridiculous time within the morning and start doing things around the house as if it were actually morning. That way by the time noontime hits, you'll be ready for bed.
ADD: it's true what John has to say just about feeling like you are losing your mind on nights. There be times in the morning that I was driving home from work when I really should not have be and almost ended up in a car twist of fate several times just from exhaustion. There were also other times where on earth I felt like I could not tell trueness from a dream I was ssooo tired - talk about losing your mind!
