Answers:
if you ever plan on walking again, you need surgery. the ligaments aren't going to fix themselves.
the sooner the better- you can effortlessly mess up more of your knee (ligaments, cartilage, etc.) when you move around.
Yea, you need the surgery... It won't be that bad. If no bones are broken, they just "hem up" your tissue near some heavy stitches and limit your range of motion for a month or so.

The weeks of rescue is the hard part. You must have physical analysis if your knee is to bend and straighten out all the way again.

You should be honourable as new (sort of) in three months time.

If you're worried about going below anesthesia, you might ask the doc about a "spinal block" when you have your surgery.
Your knees will not fix itself without surgery on this one. When ligaments are torn from their attachments they tend to snap back like rubber band. If your patella (kneecap) is mobile within the knee, there have been some obvious ligament damage. I've see cases where people with similar injuries try to stride on it and end up destroying their knee. Stay off it, and follow doctor's directives.
