How is a boldness testing perform?
a friend of mine was hit by a car and have unusual feeling in her foot. the dr. desires to do a nerve test and she is alarmed. What is actually done for a nerve theory test? Do they stick your nerves with needles?
Answer: I have have them many times, both the EMG and the NCV. Yes the tests can include sticking needles contained by the nerves. I have included details on both nerve test that describe what is done.
Here is a complete description of what is done during the an EMG: "Electromyography (EMG) measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle. The try-out is used to help detect neuromuscular abnormalities.
During the trial, one or more small needles (also called electrodes) are inserted through the skin into the muscle. The electrical activity picked up by the electrodes is consequently displayed on an oscilloscope (a monitor that displays electrical activity in the form of waves). An audio-amplifier is used so the hum can be heard.
EMG measures the electrical activity of muscle during rest, slight contraction, and forceful contraction. Muscle tissue does not usually produce electrical signals during rest. When an electrode is inserted, a brief period of activity can be see on the oscilloscope, but after that, no signal should be present.
After all of the electrodes have be inserted, you may be asked to contract the muscle, for example, by lifting or bending your leg. The action potential (size and shape of the wave) that this creates on the oscilloscope provides information about the power of the muscle to respond when the nerves are stimulated. As the muscle is contracted more forcefully, more and more muscle fibers are activated, producing action potentials."
Another mode of nerve test is "Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) try-out is a measurement of the speed of conduction of an electrical impulse through a brashness. NCV can determine nerve damage and destruction.
During the trial, the nerve is stimulated, usually with surface electrode patch attached to the skin. Two electrodes are placed on the skin over the nerve. One electrode stimulates the nerve near a very mild electrical impulse and the other electrode accounts it. The resulting electrical activity is recorded by another electrode. This is repeated for respectively nerve being tested.
The brass neck conduction velocity (speed) is then calculated by measuring the distance between electrodes and the time it take for electrical impulses to travel between electrodes."
I know it is scary, however it is particularly important to have these test to determine if their is nerve damage. The test can be unpleasant and a bit painful, but it is imperative that they find out if there is boldness damage ASAP as they can begin treating it right away.
