How to dampen muscle wastage on my gone leg post-surgery?
I had surgery done on my ankle about three weeks ago, and when they opened up the splint I notice that my left leg, specifically my calf and foot, got small, and the muscle that I used to have hold deteriorated dramatically...my calf is like "soggy" due to the loss of muscles.
I was wondering if there's any way to at tiniest minimize this, especially since I'm going to be on a cast for a while. Or is this a routine, unavoidable thing that happen with bone fractures?
Answers: Get ready for a funny looking skinny leg. It happens to any part of the pack that is immobilized for any amount of time. Once your cast is rotten for good, if your doctor hasn't mentioned it, ask about physical therapy. You should see a PT for stretching and strengthening exercises. You should do the exercises as commonly as you are instructed. It will make a difference with how quickly you rest. Be prepared for your injured leg to take a while to recover loss muscle.
I had a muscle repair on my foot. After being in a cast for 7 or 8 weeks, I be surprised with how much my calf had shrunk. I was also surprised that I couldn't do terrifically much walking without my removable air cast boot. With a right PT, I regained about 85% of my range of motion within my foot and ankle, had relearned how to walk straight, and was wearing regular shoes beside no real problems. It did take a year for me to regain the muscle mass back surrounded by my injured leg.
