I broke my 5th Medatarsal 5 days ago (2/8/09)?
I'm an a full cast and boot. Dr. told me it was ok to walk on it some, but to use my crutches as much as possible. I usually don't use the crutches at home and when walking short distances at work. My cross-examine is will not using my crutches to much slow my recovery time? My next appointment is in 4 weeks to hold the cast removed and he said we may need to add another one depending on how it looks. I've never have a cast or crutches before and I hate it already. It is on my right foot but I am still driving because I hold to get to work. I also have a 2nd job cleaning 2 small businesses that I am still doing (without crutches) as okay. I want this cast off ASAP, but I also can't just sit within a chair and do nothing. Its driving me crazy. I really don't have much headache unless I go a walk a lot in need my crutches. Please advise me if I am causing myself a much longer recovery time.
Answers: The best counsel is to follow your doctors advice.
In the mean time, try to walk on it as little as possible. Walking on it some can relieve strengthen the bone, but constant weight could slow the healing process.
