I have to have an injection in my back for a slipped disc L5 s1, how painful is the injection? very nervous
Answer: I as well as some of the others have experienced these back shots. It usually in a hospital or spine clinic. They numb the area where the injections is going to be placed. It was not to bad for me I felt pain at the skin entrance point and as the needle was guided into the epidural space and got closer to the nerves and cord it was not so much pain but pressure and some tingly sensations. None of my 7 over a period of years ever took over 15 min from the time the skin was numbed and the medication was in place. They will keep you there for 45 min to an hour to make sure that you can walk properly. You will need some one to drive you. Good luck hope this helps you the worst part at least for me was the waiting..
I had an epidural while in labor and it barely hurt at all, and that is an injection into the spine, I wouldn't go looking at any videos of it though, that's only gonna make you nervous. Do stay as calm as possible and visualize your most relaxing vacation spot while you are getting the injection. I had a Caudal Epidural 2 weeks ago at Swindon Hospital in England. All the staff are great at keeping you relaxed but guess I was really lucky that they actually gave me a General so was completely asleep when it was done,if you have this option then I'd recommend it,stops you getting any more tense than you already are.
Was expecting a miracle from having the injection, but 2 weeks on am still in alot of discomfort especially at night/early morning.Hope it works for you.
Are you taking strong painkillers?ie.Tramadol/Dihydrocodeine.c... you may still need them afterwards, guess everyone reacts differently.
Good luck, deep breathing & try to relax! .
hi,
Its not that bad actually but helps if you relax. I'm a hypnotherapist, and I can give you a tip.
Focus you eyes on one thing in the room. Focus without blinking. When your eyes have had enough, allow them to fall closed. Breath slowly, in for four, out for five. Think of a calming colour, such as blue or green, and focus that colour and your breath on a finger, or another part of your body. Contine to do this, and tell yourself that you are calm, comfortable and relaxed. keep it up until you feel you are soft, comfy, and relaxed. Good luck!.
hi hun, I'm suffering with the same, i have had the injections it stings when it first goes in but not too bad then the area goes numb ,i know its hard but try to relax a bit before hand its makes it feel worse if your tense, good luck hope it works for you :) i have not had it but im a student nurse and been with people who have had this, most of them said it only hurt as the needle went in the first time because theyget a numbish feeling after the first injection, a few said it barely hurt.
Try to google it for videos, pictures, or written references. As for the pain, you could minimize it my relaxing all muscles. Being tense increases pain.
