Is an RPA a qualified doctor?

I was in the hospital today for a torn ligament and be treated by an RPA instead of a doctor. So, is an RPA a doctor and qualified to diagnose and prescribe medications? Why was I treated by an RPA instead of a medical doctor?

Answer:    Is RPA for registered physicians' assistant? If it is consequently no, they are not a "real" doctor. However, they can diagnose problems such as yours and can prescribe meds but I don't think they can prescribe meds such as narcotics and such. And I'm pretty sure they do have to own a "real" doctor check their diagnosis and treatment plan before a patient is released.
