Whereas fingers have 3 bones within each digit and 2 joints, the thumb one and only has 2 bones and one joint. Whereas fingers can simply flex and extend (move in a straight line up and down), the thumb can flex, extend, capture and adduct (move in all 3-dimensions: moved out, right, up and down).
