Knee Injury?
I was just informed by and orthopedic doctor that i (16 years old) own a torn lateral miniscus, tibial stress fracture, and osteochondritis dessicans (OCD). I will need a minor surgery of drilling the bone to help cure the OCD. I hold not played sports for 2 weeks since the massive swelling began. Any idea when i will be fund into sports and active? Is there any long residence problems that might arise because of this?
Answer: Well really you have 3 issues going on here.
The menisucs, I would assume they are also doing some surgery on. If it is torn then depending on where on earth the tear is, they will either reattach it or cut rotten the part that is torn. This will oscillate because some of the meniscus has blood flow and some does not. The parts that do not have a blood supply will not make well on it's own which is why they tend to do a menisectomy so the torn part won't catch or flap within the joint area. Being sewn final together in a meniscal repair, these can take between 4-6 months to return to play depending on severity. If they purely cut part of it off, those are faster to taking back, but the return is more dependent on patient discomfort. When you lose part of the cushionning you can't other return to full activity (but this is NOT the case adjectives the time so don't worry).
**though you didn't mention this as part of your surgical procedures which is odd unless it is intensely small and they believe it will resolve on it's own (though usually they put you in a straight leg brace for this)
The stress fracture usually takes more or less two weeks to start resolving, but once again, it is based more on patient/athlete tolerance than anything else. Stress fractures are caused by over use, so the best entry to do is take a few weeks off, rime and use anti inflammatories. Sometimes a compression wrap such as an ace bandage can help as resourcefully. Also look at the shoes you are wearing if they are supportive and if you have flat or high arched foot, those can also add to the problem and you should be getting shoes designed for your foot type or some sort of orthotic insert to correct biomechanics of the foot/lower leg.
OCD, they are probably trying to increase blood flow to the area, this is why they would drill into the bone, motivation some injury to the tissue to help facilitate healing of the lesion. This will hopefully aid the lesion resolve. This can also take months, I would guess 3-4+ but can't give you an exact answer.
The best bet is to only just keep in accurate contact with your doctor and make sure if and when you hold surgery you keep up with your physical psychotherapy and do your own rehab at home too. The better and more determined you are for increasing your strength, balance and flexibility on your own, the greater your recovery will be. Now next to saying that, don't do any exercises that your health vigilance providers do NOT reccomend.
Long term problems- arthritis, but if everything heals summarily and there isn't a lot of make worse, you should be okay. Overtime as we age we do have to modify our activites somewhat though because damage to meniscus and cartilidge can head to future issues but most older adults regardless of previous injury hold wear and tear on their joints.
Good luck near the surgery!
the surgery for OCD is called microfracture and from what i have read u will be NWB for up to 6 weeks following the surgery. and competent to return to sports within 4 months...
