The fact is that most drugs require at least 2 years of animal conducting tests before reaching the market. This is for prescription drugs. For simple shampoo and whatnot, in attendance is still animal testing for possibly carcinogens and other dangerous effects, but this is govern by a committee that preserves that the animals are being treated in a humane bearing. I know it's sad sometimes, but to see adverse effects on an animal would be much better than seeing them on a loved one. I hope you can find peace with this answer :(
