Should I continue to workout with an arthritic shoulder and ignore the pain?
I am 76 and have trouble with an arthritic shoulder. I work out about 3 times a week. X-rays of my shoulder have shown bone on bone. It is quite painful especially any moves above my head.
Answer:
Did anyone else enjoy a impossible hours of daylight today?
i would stop the exercise temporarily and ask your doctors adviceDoes any one no how to treat a finger thats be slammed within the door?
Stop your working out NOW.From what you've said your arthritic shoulder sound relatively severe even when your not working out. I should imagine you have already been prescribed an anti-inflammatory medication and may have already seen a psyiotherapist.
Unfortunately arthrities commonly begins at one point of the body and can spread gradually or rapidy to other parts of the body (it is not always the case but it is very common).
Arthities although always present tends to go through"phases" where at times causes no or very little pain at other times the pain it can cause becomes excruciatingly painful becomeing unbarable. Pain is usually far worse in cold, damp weather,
You were more than likely advised to do Gentle excersise to help, however i'm afraid you have taken this possible advise to the exteme. You must stop your workout's now.
Go back to see your Dr. now!. Should you not already be on anti-inflammatories you will more than likely be or should you be taking them your Dr will probably increase the dosage (at least for a short time and probably the appropiate course of painkillers,. You may also need to see the psyiotherapist for a course of treatment and be shown how much and what type of excersize is right for you.
As you will know there is no cure for arthrities only control for this condition only control of the condition. You may like to try taking the following suppliments on a daily basis Cod liver Oil capsuals dosage :1 capsual daily and Glucosamine these come in both tablets and capsusals dosage: 1 tablet/capsual daily. Both of these suppliments help to maintain movement in joints.
You may also like to try a heat pad/scarf ect. you can get these from chemists. You put into microwave for 2 minutes and place over the painful area. Be extremely careful not to place directly on skin but over a shirt or towel until it is at a temperature you can tolerate. These you can use as many times as you like just pop into microwave when required,
The suppliments should you choose to try will help and although you will have no problem with them plz just check with Dr, regarding the Glucosamine as some meds can interact with it. The heat product your Dr may have already suggested you try.
The above suggestions are not an alternative to visiting your Dr. you really must go and see them increased pain like this needs to be taken seriously, and only your Dr knows your history so can act in the apprpriate manner.
Please go as soon as possible and No workouts until you have.
My own arthrities began in my shoulder when i was 20 yrs now i have it everywhere and need spinal injections every mnth. on top of other medication.
Any pain should be investigated immediately as its a sign that something is wrong. When increased pain is linked with an existing painful condition the facts stll remain the same.
Good luck on your vist & the future.
I dont take enuff sleep-and im dizzy every light of day! and my eyes hurt!?
Most definitely sir. There is a shot that can be put in there that will coat the bone and lessen the pain, but only for a while. Exercising arthritic joints may be alright I would think, if you still have some ligament between the bones. You could also have some bursitis in that shoulder, due to your having pain trying to stretch it above the head, which the shot will help. The best place to exercise any joints or the whole body for that matter, is working your arms and legs in a warm swimming pool. You should give that a try, it certainly helped my wife who has not only arthritis, but fibromyalge, not sure of that spelling, but I'm sure you know what I mean, and she just felt great afterwards. It appears that someday you will have to have surgery on that shoulder, because that bone on bone will remain. There are a multitude of new procedures out there, that it may not be bad at all to have something done. I've heard that now they have a liquid type solution or gel that is put between those bones, needs to be checked up on. I wish for you the best sir, nothing worse than living in pain. Just ask my wife.Bone on bone is going to be painful no matter what. Moving it only degenerates the joint. If you have an acceptable range of movement, and are able to sleep, then you just need to protect the joint from painful movement. If you are unable to sleep due to the pain, a shoulder replacement could be indicated. Even with a shoulder replacement, there will always be a certain amount of low level pain, and limited range of motion; you will not be able to handle any weight loading on the joint.
What you want to be sure to do is to try prevent further arthritic degeneration of other joints.
I used to wake up in the morning and feel a sharp pain like a knife going through the middle of my right foot when I started to walk. Soon I began to feel it more frequently. I added some cushioning to my shoe, and consulted with an orthopedic doctor that found my foot x-ray normal, thank goodness, but the pain persisted. I also found that one of my knees got stiff and sore whenever I sat at the computer for very long.
About six months later a friend told me had been told that a persistent pain in his back required surgery, but that after taking a new nutritional product for three months, his back pain had diminished to the point that he felt normal again. So I decided to try it for my foot pain.
Three months after starting to take the supplements, the pain in my foot went away. My knee no longer ached after using the computer. My shoulder no longer ached after playing racquet sports.
I was amazed to experience this feeling of being young again.
Email me if you would like particulars.

Adult tonsillectomy procedure & backache?
No! I work in physical therapy at one of the top rated V.A. facilities in the west; directly with one of the best Physical Therapists there. NEVER work into pain of the type you are describing. Find the range just below the pain thresh hold and work only within that thresh hold where there is no pain. The saying 'No pain, no gain", refers to muscle fatigue pain, it does NOT refer to actual pain. Also (and this is very important), consult or get evaluated by a Physical Therapist.
If you are bone on bone in your shoulder that is more than likely a rotator cuff tear, or one in the making. If you are going to work your shoulder at all I would limit to below the chest, no lifting above your head.
That said, after watching my boyfriend just suffer through 2 rotator cuff repairs, I recommend that you cease until you can get a MRI. X Rays won't show rotator cuff injuries because they do not detect soft tissue injuries.
Don't push your self, if it painful apart from the norm of working out, steer clear!!
Absolutley no way should you just carry on and ignore the pain. Pain is your body's way of telling you to stop. Ok, so you have severe arthritis in your shoulder now, but if you work out despite the pain, your condition will worsen.
Why not see a PT or an Osteopath who can advise you on excercises that would be suitable with your shoulder as it is?
take ginger tablets or capsule.eat fresh garlic and ginger in your salads.Do not have much toxic foods or drink, fried or greasy foods, sugary and fatty foods.Eat much salads as you can and drink more water.Drink lemon juice or apple cider vinegar in a glass of water.Make some oil.Take few cloves of garlic and take the skin of say 8-10 cloves .cut it very finely and very slowly haet it in a small pan until golden but not frying. When cool apply the oil on the shoulder and wrapp it with a cootton cloth.Do this twice a day .It will be 2-3 months before you are trouble free.Remember it did not start in 1 day and is not going to be away in one day.Tale some devils's claw tablets.Eat pineapple daily very good for pains. Come back and tell when it cured so others can share the problem.
Hi,
I guess I would call your doc on monday to make sure your not hurting muscles or tendons any further. Bone on bone pain is extremely painful as you know. Please be on the safe side and maybe you could start some type of water exercise through medicare at a pain management place. Sounds like you're in great shape though...take care of that shoulder now.:) Try to relax for the weekend. Yet I know the men in my family are real worker type guys as you sound like you are. They cant be still..they like to work and exercise. maybe do light things this weekend and follow up with the doc. I know we all hate seeing the doc for most things but if it's hurting as bad as you say..better be safe then sorry. My brother tore his chest muscle away from the bone while biking...and he tore his shoulder somhow.never did go to the doc.when he finally did because he couldnt stand the pain anymore. They really couldnt do anything because it had begun to heal the wrong way. I'm one to talk, I was carrying a large load of laundry down my basement steps and wiped out at the bottom. LOl I laugh not but I ended up fracturing my foot...the doc wanted to do surgery but I'm the type that "takes a licking and keeps on ticking" Long story short now my foot is messed up. Bone kind of sticks out on the side. I'm on disability for chronic pain of another kind but I need to learn to take care of myself when I'm hurt or anything.so do you...
Remember light weekend. Can you take advil? It works well and helps with inflamation. Just be sure to take it with food as it can upset your stomach. Good luck to you and please keep us posted! :)
Love,
Eileen

You are 20 years older than me and I know I wouldn't just ignore it. I'd make the doctor come up with a treatment plan for you. Here are a few links to sites I use for pain that may help you. Good luckhttp://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Ato...

Hey I am on medicare due to being disabled and you might want to check with CMS about low impact programs that medicare pays for in your area.
Exercises are very important to keep that shoulder mobile. If you have a heated pool, or can get access to one, doing the exercises there will reduce the amount of pain that it causes and the heat will be good for it too. Good Luck! :)
no!! Im young and have had Fibromyalgia for years and CANT work.impossible but not just for the pain but the FOG that goes with it. I have seizures and migraines too, but if youre in that much pain.quit! I worked and tromped on and ended up with FROZEN SHOULDER!! and SURGERY!

Dear Chuck,
In my opinion you suffring from OA(Osteoatrhitis) Shoulder.
Arthritis of the shoulder (the ball-and-socket joint) is an uncommon problem. In almost every case, the shoulder has been injured months or years earlier, leading to an abnormal wearing down of the cartilage. Injuries include bony fracture, dislocation, or heavy blow to the outer shoulder.
Fortunately, arthritis of the shoulder progresses slowly. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, physical therapy stretching exercises to preserve motion, and avoidance of activities to prevent further wear and arthritic flare-ups.
TREATMENT
Activity limitation — Avoiding painful activities in general will alleviate strain on the injured area. Restrict lifting, overhead reaching and reaching behind (eg, reaching into the backseat) as much as possible during the early recover period. It is safest to keep the arm down and in front of and close to the body.
Some general rules to decrease shoulder strain with activities include:
• Lift objects close to the body
• Only lift light weights and limit lifting to below shoulder level
• Do sidestroke or breaststroke when swimming
• Throw balls underhand or sidearm
• Avoid pushing exercises at the gym (eg, pushups, bench press, flys, shoulder press)
• Do not serve overhand in tennis or volleyball
• Maintain good posture with writing, assembly work, and other tasks by keeping the shoulder blades down and back
Pain relief — If needed, a pain medication such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®) can be taken; the usual dose of acetaminophen is two 375 mg tablets every four to six hours as needed. No more than 4000 mg of acetaminophen is recommended per day, and anyone with liver disease or who drinks alcohol regularly should speak with their healthcare provider before using acetaminophen.
A nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen (eg, Advil®, Motrin®) or naproxen (eg, Aleve®) can also be used for pain
STRETCHING EXERCISES
Heat — Heat helps prepare the tissues for stretching and should be performed prior to exercise sessions. The preferable method of heating is in a warm shower or bath for 10 to 15 minutes. Local heat (for example with a moist heating pad or a towel warmed in a microwave) is an alternative, but generally is not as effective.
Weighted pendulum stretching exercise — These exercises are intended to help maintain joint mobility and flexibility of the muscles and tendons in the shoulder. Range of motion/flexibility exercises should not cause more than a mild level of pain; patients who feel sharp or tearing pain while stretching should stop exercising immediately and consult with their healthcare provider.
This exercise should be performed once or twice per day, after the shoulder is warmed with cardiovascular exercise or a warm pack.
Ok. I hope you will be glad with my answer.
Takecare there.
