Sounds like a muscle spasm. If you've been using that arm to do starchy jobs or lifting the muscle can get over stretched which surrounded by turn causes the spasm. Hot compresses help settle them down.
Potassium is not a fruitless thing. Pretty hard to overdose on the stuff! Always undisruptive however, to talk with your Physician first & stir for regular check-ups and lab work.
