What exactly is a PRN position within a hospital? How soon ahead would you know when you work?

Answer: Sometimes it is call per diem. It is kind of like constituent time. You tell them when you can work. Usually they require you to work a minimum of 3 shifts per month. A lot of times you can work as much as you want. You will not get benefits. If a hospital is desperate, they will payment big bucks for PRN. In my state some hospitals pay less, which is stupid. I expect they do it trying to get nurses to sign on full time.
Sometimes it depends on how far in finance they do their schedule. A lot of places do monthly schedules. Actually, if you notify them the days that you can work, you set your own schedule. You probably won't have to lug call. They may call you to see if you want an extra shift if they own call-ins. It is usually your option..
I don't know where you live, but where on earth I live they are called Agency Nurses. If you chose to be one, usually they will call you at smallest 2hrs before the shift unless you have one those inconsiderate nurses who call in 30 min before the shift starts, Oh, do I dislike intensely that. You get paid closely more for being this type of on-call nurse and the benefits would come from the agency you work for. Be prepared though, you could get call 30 min before a shift is due to start, only you enjoy the option to do it or not. It's up to you. PRN= as needed. PRN means as needed. Usually just below section time. Not guaranteed any hours, they just use you when they need you. No christen or benefits. practicle registered nurse. i think you would have a set agenda. you do in my town atleast.
