What should all parents know about ensuring health and safety for their children?

Answer:    Well first of all they should know what is good for their kids; healthy eating and exercise. They should also be able to identify common infections. Oh and what moles/ freckles need checking for skin cancer. Oh and they should have a basic medicines knowledge.
For safety I don't know how many know CPR or how to perform mouth to mouth properly. They should also know how to bandage, and how to disinfect any infections from cuts (before seeing the doctor)

Apart from that they just need the common sense of not leaving dangerous things in reach of small children, kitchen knives, hot irons, chemicals, etc,

My mum's a nurse so I'm pretty lucky I had all this. .
All parents should know first aid. They should also know that children are quick and constant supervision is important. Good eating practices and a safe environment are also keys to a healthy and safe child.

5 years ago I had a very sick 1 month old that Child Flight retreived and flew to Sydney for medical assistance. She recovered in 2 weeks and is a very healthy 5 year old. So another thing that parents should know is that in an emergency, Child Flight will be there and maybe it will be your own child that is saved! Thanks Child Flight for being there for us!! What a wonderful service.
Hey, this is a very sensitive subject that many discuss upon and that is why I always tried to find the most reliable answers. However, I accidentally ran into this forum which is one of the most accurate health forums if you ask me. I suggest you give it a try as there's treatments and everything you need to know. Here's the link: http://www.myhealth-forum.com/index.php All children will get hurt at some stage, that is a part of their learning process. They have to get sick to help instill their imune system. No matter how much you cotton wool them or don't care at all, they still seem to get into some sort of strife. Healthy kids are happy kids, skinned shins, chicken pox, black eyes, the works. Just make yourself available for them and whatever they throw at you..
all parents should take the time to be parents.

dont leave them alone

try to answer all their questions

dont lie about the things that you should be truthful about (being a parent is all about trust)

really get to know your kids.

we ourselves can learn first aid, and this can help prevent accidents turning bad.

I have saved my 3 year old daughter from choking because of the simple knowledge gained from first aid and cause I never left her alone while she ate or played. thank goodness I follow my own mantra above!.
They should do their best to bring up their children in an environment they believe is suitable for children. The house should be child friendly (no small objects they can eat) and there should be a safe place that the kids can call their own and don't have to worry about breaking things. I think parents should do things like a St Johns Ambulance course so they can respond properly if something bad happens. Things can go wrong so quickly and it would be tragic if a child died after falling in a pool or a pond all because the parents didn't know CPR. .
I agree with Lara, I think healthy eating habits and exercise are key. I actually wrote an article for Prevention Magazine about tips for encouraging your kids to learn healthy habits if you'd be interested in reading in:
