What should be done to alleviate the U. S. nursing shortage?


I personally do not believe at hand is a shortage of nurses in the US. If hospital control were more respectful and supportive of our profession, masses nurses would return to the bedside. I for one did not enter nursing to be the "whole show", aka primary nursing. I expected ancillary support from nurse aides, part secretaries and the like. Hospitals a moment ago don't get it: nurses want time to whip care of their patients, not answer the phones and achieve tasks that do not require our college education/skill set to perform.

It's not simply the money, it's the culture/environment of nursing. We need to stop ingestion our young. If we are to really supervision for our patients, we need to cram to care for ourselves and respectively other. If we want to be treated professionally, then we must feat professionally. No more backstabbing and sniping at each other, afterwards we can stand together against the doctors and administrations. Not adjectives doctors are disrespectful, but it depends on the culture of the particular facility. I've disappeared the professsion for the time being, because I am not permitted to be the nurse I'm supposed to be here. I'm expected to follow orders, control costs, and not step out of file. Real nursing is stepping up to the plate and being a strong long-suffering advocate, even if it vehicle bucking the powers-that-be. Also, nurses need endorsed protection from violent patients. Doctors can veto to care for a merciful if they are abusive - why can't we? How frequent nurses end up surrounded by the ER because a patient assaulted them? Most of us only want to be good nurses and give somebody a lift care of our patients to the completely best of our abilities, and we a moment ago can't do that anymore. I've come home crying because I couldn't do enough for my patients. The culture is no longer "patient care", it's immediately about "customer gratification poll results" and "cost containments".

Train more nurses, make the profession more attractive, by eliminate some of the chores you complain about, and reimburse them more.

I am Australian and am a registered nurse/midwife. The problem seems to be indistinguishable across the globe. Apparently in attendance is a worldwide shortage of nurses. I agree with you wholeheartedly, nursing is a compassionate profession and these days we are busy next to other things that we have run out of time to do what is prominent. I also think that within is a lot of horizontal terror campaign in nursing which make it a very complex profession to work in. I guess I am a bit relieved to hear that I am not the merely one feeling disillusioned beside a profession that I have put plentiful years of hard work a training into. All the best to you.

Could bottling up my state of mind about my friends death be damaging my vigour?

If there is a nursing shortage emergency would be high and nurses would command big enough salary to attract people to train. I guess a lot of nation try for the nursing programs and don't make the cut, for one intention, or another. Nurses by tradition, I guess, are seen surrounded by unglorified terms and most nation associate nurses with the unpleasant side of pills, giving shots, etc.

Unfortunatley medical care is so expensive presently day that the nurses are stretched to their limitations.

Yes I know your problem because a great number of nurses trained in Canada go south because of the benefits and pay envelope given. So you see things are probably worse here. Nurses inevitability to be paid better and work not as much of hours. Incentives should be given to train them thereby producing more nurses every year. I was trained as a coach years ago, the cost of my first year tuition, $50.00 . Now the same tuition is over the wall. Get nurses trained, enjoy a tuition that gets them into university or community colleges and guarantees them employment once they graduate and you no longer have a nursing shortage. Over work them, beneath pay them, disrespect them and you hold what you have very soon. Make the profession like it be 30 years ago and nurses will return and others will be graduating across the nation.

Is it everyday to get a headache after staring at the computer for hours?

I've done like mad of other things before I become a nurse and honestly I don't see any difference between the on-the-job hassles and BS here vs. any other workplace. I don't mind have primary care for pts if it technique better ratios (but next our ratios are honourable in California) and I don't mind answering the phone, clearing trays or providing personal support if it needs to be done.
