It's not the merely thing that requests to be done, but it is still applicable. The physiology behind RICE is to rein in edema which, in itself, can increase affliction. Therefore, the principles of RICE will minimize pain cause by swelling. The "compression" limits the amount of fluid that leak into the interstitial space. The fracture still needs immobilization, however.

For a fracture, no, usually. Depends on where the suspected fracture is. If it's purely a cracked finger tip then there's zilch that can be done for it anyway. Been there done that twice. If it's a suspected fracture lower contained by a finger or anywhere else except the clavicle or a rib maybe later you can't use rest, ice, compression, and elevation on them anyway, so that must not be it. If you suspect you own a fracture of a long bone or load good posture joint you best travel to a doctor ASAP. Before healing starts, otherwise the bone may not alleviate straight and that can cause you problems the rest of you life span. Been there and done that too unhappily. Why not go to a doctor to be not dangerous.The best thing to do for a suspected fracture is to stop it and get to the Dr.
