My kids and I both suffered fearfully with growing pains for years. My doctor use to impart me Quinine tablets. Baby aspirin or Aleve helps. Warm baths near Epson Salt are good, too. My daughter and I found that wearing socks to bed at hours of darkness help relax the legs.
the list of things that can effect pain is epic but common things are adjectives and a diligent caring MD examing a child myself has deeply of weight.
Consider that your FEAR wishes to be addressed separately and may in fact compound the problem.

Sorry, I cannot explain much but would similar to to help. I hear from a friend, a nurse, saying that at hand is an increase in childhood arthritis nowadays.I can give or take a few bet it is growing pains. Boys go thru this more later girls so I was told. Both my boys have pains in thier legs all the time. You might enjoy him checked but, I can about bet it is growning pains.
The Dr is probably right. As we grow different parts of the bones grow at different rates, so contained by the joints some parts of bone are rubbing against parts of other bones. This cause friction. Which causes the anguish. Your son is probably having a growth spurt, so this is cause the problem. Unfortunately, there is little you can do in the order of this, but you might try icing the sore joint and resting next to his legs raised. The perfect news is, it's not terminal - he will out-grow it. I hope this help allay your concerns.
