Sleep paralysis?

Has anyone ever experienced this? It's where you are sleeping and after you wake up, you can hear what's going on around you, but your body won't move. Your brain is up and conscious, but your body is still asleep. It's really unnerving, my sister and I hold these a few times a year, anyone else out there?

When you sleep your brain puts your body into a paralyzed state to minimize movement so you can in actual fact get thoughtful rest. If you were competent to move as fully as you do when you are awake you would be exhausted every morning.

The paralysis occurs because you are coming awake from layer of sleep, and your body hasn't caught up beside your brain yet. I try to relax and maintain telling myself to stir up.

Is this supposed to happen?

I've simply had it twice, anxious the living *beep* out of me.
