It is true that doctors over prescribe misery medications. It is also true that narcotic prescriptions are fundamentally well monitored by the DEA..
But I am afraid that most of the prescribing is from the emergency of the patients. Even when a doctor thinks that the throbbing isn't very serious he/she have to consider a couple of things:
1. The doctor will consider that maybe he is underestimate the pain of his merciful. Better to over-treat than to make the merciful suffer.
2. Possibly the patient will complain to the doctors employer if the forgiving doesn't get what they give attention to they deserve. Hospitals and some HMOs have turned into customer service companies where on earth the patient (customer) is "other right." I have see this with oodles kinds of prescribed medication, ie. antibiotics for viral illnesses, blood pressure medications, anxiety medication, etc.
3. Sometimes the doctor doesn't want to piss off the merciful because an angry patient is MUCH more predictable to sue. And even a BS suit is going to cost the doctor tens of thousands of dollars and they'd rather freshly avoid it at all.
Are medication prescribed when the need is amorphous? Yes. But generally doctors aren't merely "handing out affliction meds." They weigh the pros and cons before whipping out the Rx wipe.

Here is an example of what is faced by MDs. After my intitial posting I open my mail, surrounded by it was a consideration from my state's Dept of Health. This letter tell me about a tolerant that I took care of finishing fall who come in crying of devastating excrutiating pain from an injury reported to be merely a few hours old. Having concern for the merciful, I wrote an Rx for oxycodone. Todays letter points out that this same forgiving got 30 oxycodone 2 days back coming to me -- the pt never told me about that... but on further review, this merciful appearantly didn't tell the 5 other doctors that they go to in November near what I have to assume be fabricated stories of injury. This pt amassed 231 percocet tablets in 25 days. Obviously Rx writing for controlled substances is monitored -- since I did receive this letter. It will jump into the pt's file in a minute.... but it is 3 months late and near is no repercussion.
I mull over it is getting better.. but in that are still alot of doctors who make a living doing zilch but pushing pills. I live in Ky and I know there have been a big sweep of doctors who be doing this. They have lost their license to practice and some enjoy even been charged near felonies.

well patients do what we call upon doc shopping, one doc doesnot give them what they want so they budge arround until they get one who does.within general its all right monitored but it could be better.

I enjoy multiple types of arthritis, and as a result I'm a chronic pain lenient. Oh, and because of the arthritis, I CAN'T EVEN GET DOWN TO THE FLOOR TO ROLL AROUND LAUGHING!

Morphine, Vicodin, Fentynal patches, asked me if i looked-for a morphine pump.... do you want me to go on???????? I don't know if it's apposite or bad sometimes but i know i option i wasn't in so much dull pain and didn't have to whip pills.

I infer they do not prescribe it enough! I hold tried to get aching medicine for my leg beside serious pain and they try to convey me to a pain clinic.
