They can't put a cast on it, but it help to wear something tight around the chest to make movement smaller quantity. If it breaks with deeply little pressure you can feel the " bump" approaching when someone does a Heimlich maneuver wrong... (happened to me). If the injury was from something close to a car coincidence or fall, though, a rib could be poking into another organ close to a lung and could do much more damage.

If you stood up or stretched, it'd be too much.
If you kneel over a toilet, the pain would be intolerable.

Also, it is very sensitive to touch a broken rib.
