I had one on our bed and my husband despised it. He said he couldn't roll over because the hole his body made! lolIt weighs a great deal, too.
I wouldn't consider it softer. Maybe you need to look into a goose down topper or something that "is" soft.
A pillow top mattress is wonderful. They own tops that make it a pillow top.
Memory foam is used as a comfort band. The bulk of the firmness and support comes from what's underneath, e.g. your mattress.
Now, the memory foam topper has some firmness of its own but this is unanimously low. Also, genuine memory foam softens at body heat. Memory foam is very thoroughly dense, coupled with bulk that may appear to be firmer but once you lay on it and let it take action to your body temperature, it softens.
Some cheaper toppers are indeed firmer but individual because manufacturers try to stockpile their low density (a sign of poor quality).
IF the memory foam topper is of good competence, then I'd hold to say SOFTER.
