yes they can, depending on the severity of the sprain they will also direct x-rays to make sure that you enjoy actually broken it.
the nonspecific signs of a sprain are:
pain
swelling around the joint
occasional discoloring/bruising around the joint (generally fairly suddenly after the injury has occured.)
inability to accept weight on the injured ankle (especially type 2-4)
inability to move the joint
