There are 3 grades of severity when dealing with a muscle/tendon. Grade 1: mild swelling and anguish, small microtear in muscle belly/tendon. Grade 2: moderate swelling and discomfort, partial gross tear of muscle belly/tendon. Grade 3: severe swelling and agony, gross deformation of muscle and tendon, full cleave of muscle/tendon from bone. In Grade 3 you would see that your calf muscle has rolled up towards your knees and you would not be able to point your toes. This would require surgery and in solid life, the single one that needs a doctor call round. The other grades require you to go glib on it and practice RICE techniques (rest, rime, compression, elevation above heart) and going non-weight bearing most of the time (ie crutches). Advil will help beside pain and swelling. My guidance: if you have severe dull pain and deformity (muscle feel likes a globe in the put a bet on of your leg), go to the doctor.
