How do I be a "safer" surfer?

It seem's everytime I get raining, I get hurt. If it's not 14 stitches to the facade, a broken nose or black eye, than it's a existing close call. Any speak from experience "catastrophe proners" or fellow "wax heads" out there to bestow some much needed advice?
