A friend of mine was within a car misfortune. Why did one of her doctors check her rectum?

A friend of mine was surrounded by a car catastrophe. She had two broken ribs and a collapsed lung. The doctors did a series of test. At the end one of them said, "You're doing great. We simply have a new test." He inserted his finger in her rectum. I don't deem that it was anything but standard procedure, but why? What be he checking for?
