Sounds similar to you are on the right track. I quit cold turkey 27 years ago and still remember how difficult it was. But I lived beside a smoker and worked at a place where everyone hung around my desk on break to smoke and drink their coffee. Things own changed a lot since consequently and hopefully you are in a situation where on earth you can avoid exposure to second hand smoke for the first two weeks or so. It take about that long to acquire over the worst of it. I just kept relating myself I won't smoke today, I might smoke tomorrow but I won't smoke today. I said that everyday and everyday I didn't smoke. Good luck and congratulations. I know I would be dead immediately if I hadn't quit when I did.

If it's with the sole purpose 3-5, you can probably go cold turkey, otherwise, you probably entail to use patches. When you shift cold turkey, get awfully busy. Go places; don't stay around the places where you smoke. If possible turn live someplace else(understanding relatives; tent in the middle of the forest). Associations enjoy a lot to do beside smoking.
Try to figure out what make you want to smoke. What are your triggers? Is it feeling bored, driving, drinking alcohol, seeing other relations smoke? You may not be able to avoid these triggers, but if you know what they are, and are prepared for them to trigger the urge to smoke, you will be capable of nip it in the bud, so to speak. For instance, I have the habit of lighting up in the vehicle, so whenever I got surrounded by the driver's seat, I feel like I HAD to smoke. So to boss it off, I have a stash of jawbreakers in the sports car, and started eating concrete candy before I get in the saloon. My advice is to write down doesn`t matter what makes you want to smoke and a specific passageway to deal near each. (Hard candy, phone up a friend, take a hip bath, etc.) Good Luck!
