Ingested food solitary remains in the stomach for 3-5 hours. During this time the food is soaked up with gastric liquid which break down proteins in the food. In the intestines food is further soaked with other digestive juice that break down remaining nutrients and absorb them. The transit through the small intestine last for about 3-4 hours. The endorsement through the colon lasts for an second 2-3 hours and the feces are stored in the sigmoid portion of the colon until in place to release.
